A

Life

Well

Spent

by Dave Newhouse

Sometimes your own history creeps up on you unexpectedly. Lying awake one night recently, it hit me that I’ve been watching sports for 75 years.

Three quarters of a century, 1948 to 2023, and I remember the beginning as well as the present, evolving from a sports fan into a sports journalist.

His name was Joltin’ Joe Brovia, the Davenport Destroyer. That's Davenport, California, not Iowa, a small coastal burg near Santa Cruz. Brovia was an outfielder for the San Francisco Seals, a Triple A team in the Pacific Coast League that played at beautiful Seals Stadium, where I saw my first game as a 10-year-old.

Brovia wasn’t much defensively, but, oh, could he hit, for average and power. Seals Stadium had a green 40-foot fence, from the left-field foul line through center field, 400 feet away. Left-handed-hitting Brovia hit one out to center field, and the Seals placed a star there with Brovia’s name and date of the blast. Willie Mays played in Seals Stadium for two years prior to Candlestick Park. He reportedly saw that star and said, “That must have cost a cab ride.”

Brovia had one season interrupted by an appendectomy, and so my younger brother and I, living in Menlo Park, sent him get well cards. The following Christmas, he sent us personal cards out of gratitude. Wow! How could he not be my hero for life?

When the Seals and Oakland Oaks met in a series, on Sundays they’d play single games in both San Francisco and Emeryville. Who has “double headers” like that anymore? I asked Oaks second baseman Billy Martin for an autograph after a game in San Francisco. He said,” I’ve got to catch the bus. Come to Oakland, kid, and I’ll sign.” Kid? He was 19.

Stanford Stadium was a short bike ride away, and so I saw my first football game in 1949, watching Bill McColl leap high in the end zone to snag a touchdown pass with one hand for the then Stanford Indians. McColl was an end, long before tight ends and split ends.

Something else different from today: if you were under 12, you could watch Stanford football for free. And after a game, you could walk out of the stands and mingle with the players. Stanford halfback Bob White asked me my name, and even patted me on the head.

Man, was I hooked on sports, even though my bike, hidden in the bushes outside the stadium, was stolen after a game. I naively hadn’t thought of padlocks. I also listened to Cal football games on radio -- before most folks had television sets -- and grew to appreciate both Cal and Stanford. Remember, the San Francisco 49ers were the only major-league Bay Area team at that time, and they played in the All-America Football Conference prior to joining the NFL in 1950.

Dave Newhouse as an engaging Boy Scout at age 11

As further proof that the world of sports was so very different back then, the Cleveland Indians won the World Series in 1948 and barnstormed the following spring, stopping off at Seals Stadium. Bob Feller started for Cleveland, and Satchel Paige relieved, giving up a towering double to Jim Westlake off his famous hesitation pitch. That day I saw Larry Doby hit a grounder past second, which he hustled into a double. That’s when I saw the difference between the big leagues and Triple A. They’re now the Cleveland Guardians, just as Stanford is known as the Cardinal, as Native American mascots are fading away, justly so.

There have been so many sports memories for me as a journalist, I saw Kirk Gibson hit that World Series home run off Dennis Eckersley, Dwight Clark make that franchise-changing catch, and the Cal football team score off five laterals — my three top sports moments, just ahead of the Cal crew sinking against Stanford.

It’s been an unforgettable ride, hardly believing that it’s been 75 years. And I’m still riding, which is even more fulfilling. But there is yet another memory that connected the Menlo Park kid to the Oakland scribe, tying the whole journey into a perfect afterglow.

One evening as an journalist, who would be at the same baseball dinner but the Davenport Destroyer himself. I introduced myself to Joltin’ Joe Brovia and he agreed to an interview, during which he mentioned his brief “cup of coffee” with the Cincinnati Reds one summer. He later invited my family to his home in Santa Cruz, where he showed our young son how to swing the bat properly.

There weren’t designated hitters when Brovia played, otherwise he’d have made the bigs sooner. Ball players also weren’t as wealthy in the 1940s, baseball expansion hadn’t yet occurred, and — happily — I could see a Seals home game for free on Father and Son Night — if I could find a “father” outside.

Seventy-five years. Eighty? Let’s get to 76 first.

Major League Baseball in Mexico

Grandes Ligas de béisbol en Ciudad de México

by Andy Dolich

The San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants will play Major League Baseball’s first ever regular season games in Mexico City on April 29th and 30th, 2023.

The two-game series will take place at the Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú

named after Padres minority owner Alfredo Harp Helú. The Padres have played three regular season games in Monterrey, Mexico most recently in 2018. The Giants will be playing in their first international

regular season game.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has frequently talked about the 30 team league expanding by two franchises. The Oakland A’s and Tampa Bay Rays have swung and missed on a number of new ballpark pitches. The Commissioner has discussed a $2.2 billion dollar expansion fee for any prospective city once the A’s and Rays have new ballparks underway.

Major League Baseball finds itself in a hypercompetitive world of global sports growth. It would seem that a serious look at expansion into Mexico, specifically Mexico City, should be a major focus. The job of every pro sports Commissioner is to increase the net asset value of every team and the league.

Las Vegas, Nashville, Portland, Montreal and others have received mention for either relocation or expansion. Who will pay the rumored $2.2 billion dollar expansion fee plus build a new billion dollar ballpark and create a pro baseball infrastructure in a new city? At this point no one.

Pros for Mexico

Mexico City’s population is 22 million, more than all the other markets combined under consideration for MLB expansion.

This past season, 30% of MLB players were Latino. The 2022 All-Star

game saw 26 Latino players on rosters, 18 in the AL, 8 in the NL.

The number of global companies in Mexico City would form a solid

increased revenue and marketing base for MLB and its teams

National TV contracts in Mexico would add significant revenue to MLB’s bottom line

Mexican MLB stars such as Karim Garcia, Marco Estrada, Adrian

Gonzalez, Teddy Higuera, Vinny Castilla and Aurelio Rodriguez could be involved with the franchise. Just consider the impact that former LA Dodger Icon Fernando Valenzuela could have as team President.

The Hispanic population of the US in 2021 was close to 63 million. It is the nation’s largest racial or ethnic minority. The median age range is 31, putting them in the perfect marketing demographic.

The 18-team Mexican Professional Baseball League has been around

since 1925. Other Spanish speaking with MLB connections are Dominican Republic, Panama, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Nicarargua and Colombia.

The 2023 World Baseball Classic was an incredible success on every level. Phoenix and Miami hosted sold out games along with Taiwan and Tokyo. The Championship moment between Trout and Ohtani is now in the Replay Hall of Fame.

Concerns

* The currency exchange will be a problem. US vs Mexico -- $1 US dollar=19.7 pesos.

* A new ballpark and infrastructure would have to be built in Mexico City or another location.

* Complex Issues between the USA and Mexico at the southern border.

* Safety concerns. Ongoing violence with Drug cartels

* Creating MLB fans -- existing MLB team owners who may be opposed to expansion to Mexico.

Major League Baseball could use a major shot of marketing adrenaline to keep up with the changing parameters that all professional sports are facing today. Having a franchise in Mexico City would be a significant global business building decision for the league.

Sports Talk Odds

The 47-Second Rule

by Robert Moselle, Esq.

https://www.cce-mcle.com/

As someone with "commercial-intolerance," I am quick on the draw to change channels when constant ads come on or when the same topics which were on all the previous sports talk shows are regurgitated. Below are some of the shows and topics which meet these criteria. "The 47-Second Rule" helps gauge how quickly and

repetitively the same topics are discussed either in faux anger or in pre-written scripts.

Within 47 seconds of a flip over to these shows, here is a list of what you will likely hear.

First Take: The King of 'Em All, Y'all (just ask Stephen A. -- he will be sure to let you know). Topic: That Baaaad Man, AARON RODGERS, (aka "Aaron and the Jets" for you Elton fans). Just pop a few more mushrooms and let us know already, will 'ya? Honorable mention: "Big Perk." Disagree at your own peril. Stubborn anger is so delightful over breakfast.

Get Up! More like "Throw Up!" A panel of nobodies debate the issues handed them by the suits upstairs. LAMAR! DAK. MVP. 47 seconds should be plenty of time.

The Herd: The best part of this show is that it is not Jim Rome. DAK, how will he do in next season's Dallas debacle? Is that QB BRYCE YOUNG too short for the NFL?

Pardon the Interruption (PTI): Tony waves his little flag and wonders if LAMAR will humble himself and accept a mere $160 million. Note: HOCKEY is discussed here, boys and girls.

This Just In!: Even if it was just on two hours earlier and it's now 11:00 p.m., it's "Just In!" Recently liberated from Stephen A., Max Kellerman and the usual guests get animated (within 47 seconds)

and tell us who the NBA MVP will be. Three potential winners have been de facto crowned by this rotation of self-anointed experts in second careers as talk-show regulars. Time-out: LeBRON!

Around the Horn: Four journalists in a Hollywood Squares-style set try to curry favor with host Tony Reali with prepared barbs and opinions to earn 30-seconds to deliver a cue-card script on some topic of personal interest. These "squares" demonstrate an anti-West Coast bias or just plain lack of interest. With LAMAR, JERRY JONES or that BAD MAN, the Squares battle each other as Tony cracks the whip to extract an occasional joke to move the show along. Same topics, different format, but still a channel-changer with those five-minute "breaks" in between topics. Maybe one will have a nasty comment about Draymond, but it's still "Steph Who?'

Note: As to the Warriors and other NorCal teams, to borrow a phrase, "if it weren't bad news, there would be no news at all." One regular panelist is an exception, and I congratulate Brian "Windy" Windhorst,

the only guest panelist who has ever heard of the Dubs and who warns the masses to watch out for them in the playoffs. Solid, objective knowledge has become a rare commodity in a genre which now favors showmanship and corporate obedience.

One other tip of the hat: Chris "Mad Dog" Russo. Whether or not you agree with him on an issue, at least his knowledge of sports extends to a pre-LeBron era. He has actually heard of Joe Montana and Babe Ruth. And he puts on a good show with his trademark rage, faux or not.

As to the Final Four, all of the above talk show hosts went full-chalk. None of them picked any of the Final Four. Stephen A. agonized, in full theatrical style, over Alabama or Houston. Sports Today reader Jacques Diamond's 30-1 shots eliminated both teams in one day in Sports Today's 30-1, Non-Profit Tournament. And the Final Game will feature two teams selected by Sports Today readers: Monkman's U. Conn vs. Jacques' SDSU!

Who needs AI or Sports Talk's self-proclaimed experts when you have Sports Today readers?

Final Four News

San Diego State star Matt Bradley played for Cal from 2018 through 2021 before transferring to SDSU. In their Final Four win against Florida Atlantic, Bradley led all scorers with 21 points. Above,

Hardly Trival by T. Buff

North Texas holds off UAB to win the NIT.

On Monday, UCONN vs SDS for the NCAA National Championship and UCONN is favored by 7.5 points.

I like the idea of a SDS upset of powerhouse UCONN.

And then have a NIT vs NCAA championship game.

Only once has a team won both the NIT and the

NCAA Championship in the same season.

What team did it? The award of College Basketball Fanatic goes to the person that knows the year!

Dubs' Report

Are They Back?

by Howard Pearlstein

The Dubs went against the Pelicans last week and they had it all working --- not so much in the first half – lots of butterfingers, (or as they say in Sicily -- Olive Oil Fingers – better for your health but not your W-L record) but then they came back from 20 points down to win. Felt good to see the return of the traditional third quarter giant killers, and even better, none of the fourth quarter fadeaway, instead, the fourth quarter winning push.

Steph is still Steph, and the snarl is still there, just hiding under his smile. Draymond is still in his classic “don’t wake the dragon” mode, i.e., able to slip into his fire-breathing game for good or ill. Klay is not the same -- he’s better. As if the unwanted time away from the game was also a healing respite from bumps and bangs and bruises of hard play. The new Klay is better, faster, quicker.

And Looney? Wow. Just WOW.

And another WOW and welcome back Gary Payton II, Little Big Man they call him. He and Donte quick as a ball-stealing team of New York light-fingered pickpockets.

But on the curmudgeonly side, a complaint.

I am so f--king sick of the ankle-biters nitpicking Jordan Poole, and just in case no one noticed until Fitz mentioned it during the Spurs game – Poole, like Kevon, has played every game this season, banged up, knocked down, but in it all the way every time.

His path to fulfilling his potential has been different from other high speed/high score killers. He’s the one who’s been working with a continually changing multiverse of bench players, needing to learn each new players’ reflexes and impulses and tendencies game after game, until gradually, he and Kuminga, have been turning the entire bench into a second set of starters.

Poole and Kuminga seem to be mirroring the quasi-telepathic connective mind of the Splash Brothers and Draymond. They’re incredibly fast warp speed cutters. So maybe call them the Slash Brothers.

And I mean FAST. If ever there was an NBA equivalent of, “You never see the one that gets you,” they’re it. But by the end of the fourth quarter, as the camera panned the disheartened Pelican bench, you could tell they were definitely re-seeing the ones that got them -- and in high def.

Three more games to go until the playoffs. And for those in the sports world who seem to be short-term-memory challenged, my belief the Dubs CAN make it all the way again comes from two words -- Last Year.

Everyone was writing off the Dubs:

“Oh, they’re not going to make the playoffs.” “They suck.” So ok, they had to win the Play-In before they could go on. After which, they took it all the way against the best in the NBA to once again be the champs.

The Dubs can still get up to that level of pure WOW, just took a while longer than usual with injuries and changing players to get it all in sync. Could see all the gears meshing in the Spurs game.

And then take it on the road. They can do it.

And remember:  It ain’t over till the MVP dances.

Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.

An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

The world famous Harlem Globetrotters tour the world every year and every year they visit the Bay Area. More than a cookbook, this culinary delight was written to preserve a great chef's traditional family recipes and stories of her childhood for her far-flung grandchildren. Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

The absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!

The Ultimate Sports Guide is very appreciative to the ongoing contributions made by former staff photographer Kenny Karst and Robert Moselle. Mr. Karst, now retired, continues to contribute through helpful ideas and his archives. Mr. Moselle is now lending his extensive editorial experience and marketing savvy to the publication.
